Could Chemicals (or Carageenan) in our food be part of the problem with type II diabetes?
Why a Low Fasting Blood Sugar?
I recently have been seeking to have a low fasting blood sugar that is under 92. There have been many studies in the last few years that have linked higher fasting blood sugar to increased risk of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many other diseases. I have urged my clients to get a glucose monitor and take their blood sugar everyday or every few days after fasting for at least 12 hours.
I Test My Blood Sugar.
I have done this myself. I started testing my blood glucose and what I have found is quite surprising. When I first started testing myself some things did not make a lot of sense and some things did. For instance, we started eating a Paleo diet (which is generally lower in carbs) for dinner, and this helped our fasting blood sugar, but not always. There were times when I would eat a low carbohydrate diet and my blood sugar would go up! Then there were other times when I would eat carbohydrates (not sugar) and my blood sugar would be better than on the low carbohydrate diet.
Carageenan was my problem.
I had been trying to solve these discrepancies. Then one week I had something interesting happen to me. I had bought a different brand of creamer and my blood sugar over the next few days kept going up in spite of the fact that I ate almost the same food everyday (I was trying to reduce variables). I then looked at the new creamer I got and looked at all the additives. What I found was carageenan in higher levels than my old creamer. I looked up carageenan and found in some studies that it has been linked to higher blood sugar in 80% of people who consume it! I then went off all carageenan and I saw my blood sugar drop like a rock. It was down to 79 in just 5 days!
Carageenan is in Organic Products!
Carageenan is in organic products as well as main stream products. I have found it in lots of dairy products and even rotisserie chickens. I am now staying away from it and my fasting blood sugar thanks me. There are others who have been talking about this chemical as well, and I would urge you to read their articles too.
Testing my Blood Sugar was Important.
If I had not started to test my blood sugar, I would not have discovered that this chemical was raising my blood sugar. How much damage has been done? I will not know, but I now know to avoid this chemical. I think everyone should test their blood sugar and protect their health.
