The goal is to please Christ. Nothing else, just please Christ. This has brought many verses to mind, like "If you love me [Jesus], you will follow my commandments" John 14:15 and Gal. 1:10 which tells us we need to win God's approval. I also remembered John 21:22 when Jesus talked to Peter about John's path in life and he said to Peter "What is that to you?" Peter was not to look at other people's paths in life, but was to look only to what Jesus had for him to do. Jesus called Peter to a certain direction that was just for Peter. Jesus wanted Peter to please Him. Jesus said, "You follow Me". It is as if Jesus said, "Peter, follow the calling I have given you."
What calling has God given you? Let's look at our own lives. It does not matter what other people think about your life or my life. It only matters what Christ wants us to do. Some of the things that Christ wants us to do are known in His Word and are universal, while others are very specific to you and me. These callings that are specific are often harder to find and must be sought after. Let us seek after God's purpose for our lives with diligence and persistence. For we know that it is not just when we are young that God calls us to do his will or calls us in new directions. God called Moses when he was 80 to lead in a new way (Ex. 7:7).
We need to continually seek after what God would have us to do. We should remember the words of Jesus who said,"seek, and you will find" (Matt 7:7). Remember that we are trying to please and serve God with our whole life and no one else - and I mean no one else.
