Could Vitamin D Help With Colds?

10/28/2012

Once again the headline of a study is somewhat misleading.  A new study on vitamin D and colds came out.  This study showed vitamin D was little to no help with colds and the headline read, "Vitamin D No Help For Colds, Study Suggests".  This is a nice headline, but what did this study prove and disprove?  Did it really show that Vitamin D is no help for colds?

There are several things in this study that I looked at.  First the participants were given monthly shots of 100,000 IU.  This is good because we know that everyone in the study took the vitamin D (compliance can be a problem) that was supposed to.  This also means that the people who got the shots only got about 3,334 IU's per day which sounds like a lot less than 100,ooo IU.  The second thing I saw was that the vitamin D raised their blood levels from 29 ng/ml (nano-grams per milliliter ) to 48 ng/ml over the course of the study.  The study started in the spring (when vitamin D levels would be at their lowest) and ended in the fall (when vitamin D levels would naturally be higher).  All of these observations are important and we now have to ask ourselves some questions.  What were the blood levels in the winter when most people get sick? What if someone started with lower levels of vitamin D?  Would it have helped them to take more? What if 48 ng/ml is not high enough to get the immune enhancing effects of vitamin D?

We know from other studies on bone health and cancer that you want your blood levels to be between 70 ng/ml and 80 ng/ml.  Would this level of vitamin D help our immune systems?
What this study does show us is that raising your blood levels of vitamin D from about 30 ng/ml to about 50 ng/ml does little to help our immune system stop colds from happening.  This, however, is a long way from proving that Vitamin D does not help with frequency of colds at any level.  It also does not disprove that bringing up levels of vitamin D in someone who is very deficient would be helpful in lessening the frequency of colds.

Amazing fruit drink!

I used my blender to make this great fruit drink!  Blending is great because you get all the fiber from the whole fruit and the nutrients from the peel.  I think it is better than just juicing and it can taste great too.  Both of my kids loved this drink and my niece did too! This drink is great for you.  It has ellagic acid from the pomegranate and quercetin from the apples, both of which can turn off and on genes. It also has lutein from the kale which is great for your eyes.  I used about one fourth of a pomegranate, a whole apple, half a banana, 1 tsp of coconut oil, orange juice and kale. I then blended it in a 3.5 horse blender for about one and a half minutes.   This blends up all the pomegranate seeds so the drink is fairly smooth.

Many people I talk to have problems sleeping so I thought I would tell what my wife and I do.  The two things that are probably the safest and have the least side effects for sleeping are L-tryptophan and Rhodiola Rosea.  We take 500 mg of Tryptophan and more than 300mg of Rhodiola about 15 minutes before bed and this helps us sleep.  We also use classical music with stringed instruments some nights. We seem to get a deeper sleep and wake up feeling better in the morning.  If you want to eat your Tryptophan you can eat a lot of turkey before bed and then take some Rhodiola.  I hope you enjoy my health tip for the day.

Balancing Mens Hormones Through Food.

Aspartic acid is great for older men because it helps make luteinizing hormone which can raise testostrone.  Many men, as they age, have lower levels of testostrone, but a study in 2009 showed that Aspartic acid raises both Luteinizing hormone and testostrone (Reprod Biol Endocrinol. 2009 Oct 27;7:120.).  This is great because we can get Aspartic acid through our diet and help our bodies works properly.  An easy and inexpensive way to get Aspartic acid is by eating 2 to 4 eggs a day.  This would give you about 1500mg to 3000mg of Aspartic acid a day.  In the study I talked about above they took Aspartic acid for 12 days and got positive results so I would try eating eggs everyday for two weeks and see if this helps you.  This is just one more reason to eat eggs everyday.  I do and the more I learn about eggs the more I think they are a great food.

What Oil Should I Use?

What oil should I use? This question has more than one answer.   One oil to think about using (especially for cooking) is Coconut oil.  It is a great oil to cook with because it does not get damaged like other oils when heated.  It does not have hardly any polyunsaturated fats that get damaged from heat and become transfats.  Coconut oil also has antimicrobial effects it can kill many viruses, fuguses, and bacteria.

It helps you feel full.  Many people have used it to help them loose weight.  The benefits do not stop there.  It also improves absorption of vitamins and nutrients and can help your gut by balancing the flora and feeding your gut (because you gut can use the medium chain fatty acid for food).  I use about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of coconut oil a day.  This let's me receive many of the benefits of coconut oil but keeps my calories to about 40 to 120 a day.

What are the best supplements to take?

If you want to get the most benefit from your supplements without taking hundreds of pills then you have to look at which supplements you get the biggest benefits from.  VitaPastor has done years of study to discover which ones are the most important and has 3 top supplements that everyone should be taking.

They are Multi-Wow, Fish oil, and additional vitamin D in the fall and winter.  Multi-Wow has lots of nutrients that do multiple functions for your health and if I had to take just one thing I would take Multi-Wow.  Multi-Wow is six specialty products in one, as well as, a multivitamin.  Multi-Wow can help with your eyes, boost glutathione, increase your feeling of energy, support your liver, help protect your DNA, support your nerve health, and skin health. You get all this rolled into one bottle.  It even has 4000 IU of vitamin D in it.

Vitamin D is great for you. It may lower cancer rates, increase balance, improve muscle tone, lower your chance of cavities, and the list goes on and on.  Multi-Wow has 4000 IU for year round use, but I would take more vitamin D in the fall and winter when we cannot get vitamin D from the sun.  A resent study showed that the average person has to take 8000 IU of vitamin D to get to 50 ng/ml and my target is 70 ng/ml.  I think the 9000 IU (Multi-W0w plus 5000 IU) in the fall and winter is very safe but I would always recommend getting you blood levels checked by your doctor so you know how much you have to take to achieve optimal levels.

Fish oil is my last top 3 pick.  People seem to know that it is good for you but they do not know why it is good for you.  Fish oil lowers your chance of Alzheimer, sudden death heart attract, help your eye health, help with healthy aging, lower depression, help with bipolar 2 disorder, good for child development, and much more.

Some of the biggest health benefits in supplements can be found in these three supplements.  If you are confused about all the supplements out there or just want the best health you can get with the fewest supplements at the best price then these three are for you!

In the northern parts of the US we are getting close to the time when we stop making vitamin D from the Sun. Today you could still make vitamin D from 10:30 to 1:30pm in Pasco, Wa. but by the first of September that window drops to 11:10am to 12:50pm. Then the last day to make vitamin D in Pasco Wa, is September 5 from 11:40am to 12:10pm. If you go south the window of vitamin D gets bigger. Salina, Ks has a vitamin D window from 10:30am to 2:40pm today with the last day of September 24 from 12:00 to 12:45.

High blood pressure? Try two bananas and five celery stocks a day. Both of these foods have been shown to lower blood pressure! They work in different ways so by combining them I would think you could get even more blood pressure lowering effect!  Many people love eating banana and celery through out the day.  You could also try fruit smoothies or you could juice celery and cucumbers together for a vegetable drink.

Get Health benefits from Butter!

Yellow Butter and Normal Butter
Butter is not as bad as some may say.  It actually can have some health benefits if you eat the right kind of butter.  Butter has two things that can make it better for you.  It has one of the only dietary sources of butyrate which is a short chain fatty acid that helps feed your intestinal wall and promotes colon health.  Butyrate is also a gene target and can help you live longer and healthier.  The second very unique thing about butter is that it can have a high level of vitamin K2 (MK7  which is in Multi-Wow also) which has an effect on bone healthy and has been shown in some studies to reverse hardening of the arteries.

How can I make sure that I get these two great health benefits?  I try to buy yellow butter in the summer that comes from grass fed cows.  This kind of butter has the highest levels of K2 and has the most health benefits.  I do not recommend cooking with butter as you can damage the fats but putting it on toast or over vegetables (even better) is a great way to eat it and tastes great!

Fish Oil seems to Good to be True

Omega 3's have a lot of health benefits. They can lower your chance of sudden death heart attack and can even help with dry eye.  They can also reduce your chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease and reduce joint pain.  The list of benefits goes on and on.  If you are not getting at least 1g of Omega 3's a day I would highly recommend you talk to your doctor about starting.  I take highly concentrated fish oil so I do not have to take to many pills.  After I take my fish oil I take about 3 drops of orange oil.  This gets rid of the fish burp and I think it might even help with absorption (but this is my own theory.  It is well known that orange oil brakes up grease and fat, so if the orange oil could brake up fish oil into smaller sizes it might make it easier to absorb.  I have not seen any studies in this regard but it makes since in my mind).  Orange oil has health benefits too!  We will have to talk about orange oil next time.  For now I hope that you take fish oil and enjoy the health benefits that come with them!
